Rheumatoid arthritis

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in both cystic fibrosis and fibromyalgia in order to improve the quality of life of those affected. While special breathing techniques and mobilisation help to loosen the viscous mucus in the lungs and support respiratory function in cystic fibrosis, the focus in fibromyalgia is on pain relief through gentle movement exercises, manual therapy and relaxation techniques. In both cases, targeted physiotherapy treatment helps to alleviate symptoms and maintain physical function in the long term.

Illness

The term rheumatism covers more than 100 different diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis (also known as chronic polyarthritis or (hereditary) primary chronic polyarthritis) is the most common inflammatory disease of the joints. Morphology of the hand with cP - the characteristic ulnar veining is shown on the picture on the right.

The onset of the disease is often complex and can be painful, with discomfort in the small joints of the fingers or toes. Other joints, such as the hands, knees, shoulders, feet, and hips, may also be affected. Typically, the carpal bones, metacarpophalangeal joints, and proximal interphalangeal joints (PIP) are involved, while the distal interphalangeal joints (DIP) remain unaffected, unlike in gout. Affected joints may become swollen, warm, and, in some cases, red.

Symmetrical (bilateral) synovitis is a common characteristic, though not always present. Symptoms are usually most pronounced in the morning, often referred to as morning stiffness. As the disease progresses, joint mobility may become increasingly limited. The condition usually occurs in flare-ups, which can last from a few weeks to several months. Between these episodes, symptoms may subside. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life, as a complete cure is often not possible.
